The Knowledge - Stop 2: Tehran: Artist Talk with Amirali Ghasemi

Artist Amirali Ghasemi discusses Iran & CO, his ongoing curatorial project. Iran & CO includes an exhibition, a documentary and an archive project. The exhibition gathers a number of site and context specific commissions conceived by the newest generation of Iranian artists, who have all been invited to produce works outside of the gallery space.

The 'documentary/film/installation' Iran Beyond Borders (1960-2010) maps out the history of modern and contemporary art in Iran, from the late 50s to today. It aims to archive and review more than 100 Iranian art exhibitions in the last 10 years, and features interviews with key figures of the contemporary Iranian art scene (such as Khosrow Hassansadeh, Ghazel, Alireza Samiazar, Fereydoun Ave, Hamid Keshmirshekan, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Barbad Golshiri and Rose Issa) on subjects including the impact of the market on artistic practices, the local in relation to the global, the politics of representation and identity. The film will be premiered in Bruges, Belgium, in October 2010.

Amirali Ghasemi was born in Tehran in 1980. He graduated in 2004 with a BA in graphic design from Central Tehran Azad University. In 1998, Ghasemi established Parkingallery, an independent project space in Tehran, and in 2002, Parkingallery.com, a virtual gallery, which has become an online platform for many young Iranian artists. He has shown his photography/videos/design works in Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Canada, USA, Australia, Turkey, Indonesia, South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. In addition, he has directed audiovisual projects with Iranian rock bands. â€¨As a curator, he has directed many exhibition projects for Parkingallery project space and other institutions. These have included Among Them: Deep Depression (2004), Transition (2005), Deeper Depression (2006), Lost in No Space (2006) and Limited Access (2007).

Iran & CO is a production of the Cultural Centre of Bruges, with the support of the Vlaamse Gemeenschap, and Parkingallery projects Tehran.

This talk is part of a series of events which focuses on emerging artistic networks and strategies in the youthful Iranian capital.

The Knowledge - Stop 2: Tehran. A series of events between 5 and 19 October 2010, at The Delfina Foundation. A journey through visual culture, one city at a time. Parkingallery is changing from an E- gallery/ nice looking static website to a multifunctional blog / news portal on Iranian and international contemporary arts and design… this decision has been made through around a year of less frequent activities on our website focusing on other projects including the our monumental mega exhibition in a suitcase: URBAN JEALOUSY/The roaming biennial of Tehran . There are other reasons to shift our activities from plain showcasing up and coming artists to a more advanced way of paying our due to the community of Iranian involved with arts, to name a few:

1st of all because of the fact that the way we Iranians are dealing with Internet phenomenon and its fabulous growth in Iran despite obstacles raining from everywhere (!), we are encouraging our artists friends to setup their own personal websites and try our best to help them both as design studio and a project space to promote and maintain their website while benefit from being linked and featured in our refreshed website.

Secondly despite we’ve never have been acting as a commercial gallery, an increasing numbers of the artists used to work with us did or about to sign restricting contracts with individual, institutions and galleries,which made us think to refresh what we has been showing on our website for over a decade, to be experimental and less conventional and more and more away from sophisticated mainstream trends, and more importantly focused on new media art projects and knowledge production it the field of interdisciplinary practices.

we believe that current circumstances forces by various players in the scene made circulation of the art and its makers and contributors in Iran going through severe unfair issues, caused many talented young artist to be ignored to to fall into early professionalism which kills their interest and reduce their intention for experimental projects and practices, having said that what is really a nessesity of our time is building up an news portal/idea exchange pool which aims to track what’s happening now in the art scene by documenting see-worthy happening and events and what has been through by interviewing the key figures in the field, helping us to discover the lines between the lines of unwritten history of our own! ( wow what a big claim!)

Finally to find practical way to make parkingallery’s archive on contemporary arts, which has been evolving through the years, available online and to public.

To make all this happen, we are looking for contributors from around the world who are interested in the arts and its universe to join our team and/or help us as freelance reporters and photographers, we will write more about this call, very soon.

The theme of this biennial is URBAN JEALOUSY. A Jalousie * (“jealousy” in French) is a window that one can see through but not be seen; barriers that allow us to observe the world without being invited to the table. Iranian artists are given an understanding of what goes on in the world without being offered a single opportunity to communicate their thoughts—outside of our very own jalousie window: a rigid ethnic frame within an extremely politicized context.

Of all the huge urban areas around the world, Tehran stands out as a different kind of Megalopolis. It boasts one of the most dynamic art scenes in the Middle East even as the city itself deals with a rudimentary public transport system, an exploding population crisis, and an ever-increasing sprawl of mass housing; An unsightly city of experimental architecture that swallows entire villages and towns without offering them any sort of public services.

Despite its complicated urban situation—which according to experts has already spiraled out of control—artists’ societies in Tehran continue to hold numerous biennials in semi-tribal fashion. A great number of these events are government-sponsored projects whose outlook and also their premises can shift 180 degrees from one year to the next. Each community has its own set of ceremonies, as a result of which, any sense of solidarity among the artists is lost.

The Tehran Visual Arts Festival, The Calligraphy Biennial, The Sculpture Biennial, The Cartoon Biennial, The Painting Biennial of the Islamic World, The Graphic Design Biennial, The Children’s Books Illustration Biennial, The Painting Biennial, The Poster Biennial, The Poster Biennial of the Islamic World… the list is endless.

Although the legendary "TEHRAN BIENNIAL" goes back 50 years, not a single one of the above-mentioned events can be considered a biennial by prevailing and accepted international standards". An arts society recently published a call to boycott the upcoming Painting Biennial in order to demand a professionally curated exhibition, protesting the open call process and a “jury” they deemed unacceptable.

It seems impossible to have a proper Tehran biennial in Tehran, so our sprawling city and its elitist art scene remain excluded from the highly competitive art market in the region despite being surrounded from all sides by lucrative biennials and auctions. We may have great artists living and working in Iran, but we don’t have a chance to share the profits.

Tehran, as one may suppose, does not seem interested in presenting itself as a desirable destination for cultural tourism, by playing it ‘cool’ like other global cities, or scramble to be hip by coughing up the membership dues to be in the international art market.

So, to jumpstart the process, and after a long discussion with my friend, Serhat Koksal — a critic of the global biennialization process — we decided to curate a ‘mini’, on the move, Tehran biennial. To not only stop complaining about the current situation but to benefit from the advantages of it. An independent, low- budget, traveling exhibition which can be presented almost anywhere. We will travel like nomads, carrying artwork, objects, texts, and whatever, in a package no bigger than a medium-sized suitcase, preferably weighing less than 20 Kg., so it can be carried on any cheap flight.

Urban Jealousy will end its journey in May 2010,but Tehran’s Roaming Biennial will carry on.Feb 2008

Imagine a city that you've only seen in reproductions or perhaps have merely heard about. A place, like many others, that exists only through rumors, stories, novels, the nightly news, magazines, movies, and the Internet. Using these secondhand clues as firsthand research material, invited worldwide contributors-who have Never Been to Houston- will photographically document (without leaving home) what they imagine Houston to look like. Contributors will upload their photos daily to an on-line Flickr site, which will be projected as a slideshow in Houston's Lawndale gallery. Anything that anyone might take a photograph of is fair game. Just as long as it feels like Houston.

For the contributors to this exhibition, the task is to search through their daily life for clues to a foreign place, for the possibility that somewhere else exists right under their nose and that, like some clunky form of astral projection, you can travel to other lands without leaving home. For viewers in Houston, it's a chance to witness an unusual mirroring of their globally projected image. In addition to the traditions of storytelling and travel guides, new information technologies are expanding the possibility of knowing a place to which you've never traveled. Three-dimensional electronic maps, 360 degree images, hosts of amateur and commercial websites and podcasts about a given city, its economy, demographics, culture and subculture have opened the way for a new vernacular of representation.

In the end, Never Been to Houston is an experimental, virtual travelogue to the city that the New York Times opines "refuses to assume a simply identity."

Esther Lu and Adnan Yildiz invite us to a discussion around the
role-position of artist today in reference to the changing structures
of contemporary art. Today, artists are traveling a lot due to
residencies, biennials, grandiose exhibitions and etc. And they do not
like to be involved into these processes as "tourists" but they are
also somehow tourists in this game… In relation to their research in
Stockholm, Yildiz and Lu select inspirational videos in order to
trigger a discussion around how artist
deconstruct-fictionalize-establish-reproduce him/herself in/through
their works in this given traveling context. The curators introduce
the concept of 'universal traveler' and contextualize the issue around
the hot topics like ''new-internationalism", "mobile identities", "art
market-ing" and "globalization-alism".

AK28 is the venue of this show for its identity as being an artist-run space.

Categories of submission are
A - New Media (Video / Audio / Interactive / Web)
In this category we accept demos for review (on CD/DVD/VHS), videos less than 6 min will have the opportunity to be played on our large screen, otherwise if you are about to submit a video artwork which is longer than 6 min we recommend you to set up your own TV plus VCD/DVD player in the gallery. We also accept Audio Artworks if they are less than 2 MB can be sent by e-mail & the one which are bigger must be send via post.
Interactive artworks should be mailed to us on a CD or if they are web based they can be uploaded in a website & the link can be submitted by e-mail.
B - Performance
Performance Projects can be submitted on paper including synopsis / concept, plus any kind of documentation like Photo, film & any other visual material is recommended.
C - Photography
We accept photos as individual or series less than 4 as Digital files for review, the area which is reserved for each photographer is 1.5 meters of wall in width.
D - Typography
Typographers are asked to send their artwork via e-mail or by post A4 (72 DPI for Email or An A4 Print for Post) the final size for the artworks will be 70x100 or 50x70 (Width X Height).
E - Flash Fiction
Flash Fiction, texts less than 500 words are accepted, the submissions should be typed & Emailed to us. A booklet of selected stories will be published within the period of exhibition.
F - Illustration/Painting
Digital photos are accepted for the review & should be mailed or e-mailed to us. The area which is reserved for each artist is 1.5 meters of wall in width.

Note 1: We also accept documentation videos of performances, installations & happenings…
Note 2: Photographers, illustrators, typographers and writers can work as a team & submit the result to the deeper depression project for example by illustrating a flash fiction or by using typography for a short story.
Note 3: We ask the international participants to send us a high resolution files as well to help us to produce a high quality large format print for the exhibition. National participants are also able to use discount from our sponsors.

A Random Post for guardian talk found on pc today

"Routines can cause me massive sadness... I often try to take a different routs coming home...."

Wow! This is just like the way I lived my life since 9 years now just after I finished the high school! Every day I'm trying to do something new some thing that I've never done before! Or other wise I feel I'm trapped inside a useless circle … by living this way it was always hard for me to remain in a position/job for any period of time longer that 3 months! I only can accept short term projects & that's why I can't make sure to earn a fixed income in a month. It's like an adventure to be able to stay unstable but reliable!

Oh, My bad English again , of course the show did happened in Feb. 2004 in 2 galleries in 2 different locations one for the typography & photos (Atbin gallery) The other one Azad gallery was for the video & audio installation plus 5 performances ...
I was not satisfied with the result totally because I didn't let myself to select the people's submission, they are were accepted but a few pieces that the gallery owners deicide not to show for their own reasons, It was my first big curatorial project & my idea was to present an slice of what we -a new generation of Iranian contemporary artist, (what an ambitious title & what an ambitious goal!!!) - have to show to our audience!

But about "How do we represent pain killers?"
I think it not nessesrily meant to be a kind of pain killer
But some time the creation just make us feel better (for a weak example! don't you think it's pretty hard to tell if your neighbor didn't give birth to his sons, the life was much harder for her?) I know that its not fair to cause problems for others for the sake of solving one self's problem (here problem of being or living in this miserable world) , but when we are trying to change/create something to get rid of our current situation, (here some may create artworks or at least some artwork like stuff) I think It's an act for survival & in this hard attempt, it makes sense to me to have some thing like pain killer "that calms you down and/or let you continue" I believe we are surrounded by many type of Pain killer ranging from your favorite TV channel to cherry Ice cream & a from your newspaper to drugs! You add any sport, holidays, hobbies & etc to the list! They all work well; you only need to find the ones that really fit! They meant to set our mind on something else instead what is really going on (at least for short period of time!)
I might have sound a bit crazy in the previous paragraph but I've been thinking of this for a long time what do you think?

It's depressing Friday evening in Tehran! I don't remember that it was sunny or cloudy...
I remembered to refer a short story about that clown who went to a psychologist, because he couldn't laugh any more, The psychologist offer him a ticket & said: There is a big circus in town take this ticket & I'm sure that you be laughing on the floor only if you see their clown!
He answered: I can't accept this sir! I can't watch the show while I'm performing it!

I don't mean that we are in entertainment business! but sometimes the sweetness of creating something may last very shortly ...

Documentary photos taken by the artist from Tehran’s most popular cafes (or coffee shops as we call them here in Iran). Coffee shops in Iran are the symbol of social freedom to some degrees due to the absence of a proper public space. It’s a place where both splendidly motivated youngsters & intellectual brains gather, it’s also a meeting place for the journalists as well. The faces of young ladies in these photos are hidden by blank spaces (stickers). By reducing the level of information that each photo can offer to the visitors, the artist has tried to prevent the Media from easily misusing, manipulating or interrupting the image in a mass global scale.
But the connection isn’t lost completely as visitors (users) are let to explore an interactive program based on the photos to know more about these ladies by clicking & listening …

Iranian Poster Exhibition in Ogaki

Ogaki Poster Museum, Japan
Noboru Matsuura, Professor of Kanazawa University and the director of Ogaki Poster Museum invited Iranian poster designers to Ogaki Poster Museum for the Iranian Poster Exhibition in Japan. The exhibition is scheduled to open on October 29, 2005 through November 26, 2005.

Five international invitational poster exhibitions were held in this museum since now, that the well-known poster designers will take part in it from all around the world. Prof. Matsuura organized three periodical exhibitions: Polish Posters, 1999; Chinese Contemporary Posters, 2001 and 65 years Cuban Posters in 2003. He is also organizing Iranian Poster Exhibition now. This exhibition was organized by cooperation of the 5th Color.

He says: "Iranian posters have been drawing international attention in these years. This is mainly because people are taking a great interest in the Persian and Islamic culture. In other words the posters symbolize the fantastic culture of a specific country. I always think "Posters are art and message" and have introduced the masterpieces of posters from such countries as Poland, the United States, ex Soviet Union, Germany, Finland, Czech & Slovakia, Switzerland, France, China and Cuba. For this time of particular occasion I am thinking to introduce the posters of your country, Iran."

Present Iranian typography is different from western design. What do you think is the main difference between western and Iranian typography?

I believe one of the main differences is that the smallest typographic unit in Iranian typography is “word” as opposed to the “letter” in the western typography. Therefore the Iranian designer not only considers the relationships between the words but the different possibilities and relationships among the letters within a word as well.

In some countries, graphic design has very positive feedback from the general public. In others, it doesn’t draw much attention, at all. How does the Iranian society value the work of graphic designers?
The Iranian society has historically been and still is very much a literature based society visual are in the second or ever the third position in term of communication. I would say although the designers in the past couple of decades have been making an effort in spreading the visual culture; however the lack of emphasis on this field in education has raised a generation neutral towards visuals.

The development of western graphic design is strongly influenced by technology. Today, this mainly means computers. What is your approach to the computer as a tool?
For me its like a big helping hand, as my I receive my inspirations from the contemporary life of our society & my sources are mainly my digital photos from urban surfaces & found type objects that they need to be touched & edited to be ready for work, my generation stood up & started its career in the age of computer but I used to mix the hand & the new tool together to create my design atmosphere more personal & unique.

What are the roots of your work? To what extend are you influenced by contemporary western design? Do you adjust your work to the taste of western audience?
Contemporary Iranian cultural & social life which includes all sorts of opposition, high and low, popular and elite and western and eastern ethics and global.

I am and am not. I use western design to learn from but the western design doesn’t set my aesthetic taste.

No! To be honest I don’t care if they like it or not. But I have to mention that after nine /eleven as the political aspects & the western medias grabbed world’s attention to middle east & I think it had positive & negative sides for our design in one hand every design/culture product from these part of the world praised & celebrated by western audience, in other hand as these are waves that are coming & going, the proficiency in choosing good design from poor design is getting harder & harder… this specially can be marked out while we are talking about typography (here Persian typography).

What is the role of women in contemporary Iranian design?

What is the like in the rest of professional fields; women are becoming more active in the field of design as well. However unfortunately their voices are not as much heard because of the male oriented society in which we live in. I have to mention as women have powerful participation in illustration field that most of the design studios are directed by men.

Its Parkingallery.com's 4th anniversary... So silent, so alone, after a 1 month fight to renew the Domain name & find a porper web hosting, the site is still on the old server, I hate Iranian service providers, I spent 60$ to renew the domain this year but after passing 2 middle hand companies i just could register it for one year...
Any way parkingallery will be updated soon as soon as I can transfer it to the new server , we will have new artists plus new projects which I will let you know but I know that no one read my blog...

Group Portrait exhibition by Shahab Fotouhi, Neda Razavipour, Jinoos Tagizadeh, Barbad Golshiri Behrang Samadzadegan June 24- July 6 Khak Art Gallery, TehranAssemblage; It wasn't an outstanding exhibition at all! I can easily call it an assemblage; by knowing this fact which some of the participating artists owe a big debt to circle of tehranavenue.com e-magazine for their support promotion & some other contribute frequently for the magazine.

While Jinoos tagizadeh & Behrang Samadzadegan are repeating their semi successful careers in previous exhibitions, Heavy influence of literature on Barbad Golshiri's artworks never left him alone; Fascinated by himself to death standing with his funny award to pose all that he has in his hands, plus quoting is an almost old-fashion trick these days (any one can read philosophy books!), that it seems that he can't can't avoid because of his celebrity-like success during past two years; Yes they are self portraits but although the message is lost & they can't go any further than large format printed show offs ... but to be honest we have to wait & see the artist's collection "odyssey - I ".

Census by Shahab Fotouhi & Neda Razavipour was made to be shown in Colombia University few years ago & it's a little bit carelessly edited: "We still have a bunch of unused materials ..." says Neda Razavipour. The whole story was filmed during their big big project with atisaz residential complex. The curator(s) the exhibition can't be proud on this unless believing (or claiming) that these are an un-perceptible variety of pieces ranging from rubbish to fine artworks under title of a portrait exhibition!

Parkingallery.com; Transition :Installation in Azad Art Gallery TehranA light torch was given to every visitor who wanted to participate in the installation, then the attendees were asked to stand in front of the camera while a video collection of random short clips, taken of Tehran's flickering neon lights (taken in the streets from restaurants, shops, supermarkets & ...) was played in the background.The result was recorded & screened live on the other screen. The combination of random people who frequently participated & agreed to stand on the spot and comercial neon words created & introduced an enormous wide range of new expressions & meanings.

Listen closely and take a seat. Here is the bad news first. The original and one-and-only Lomo LC-A camera has been taken out of production. Some of the most beautiful items ever created (the original VW bug, Constellation, Tupolev, Concorde and Illushin airplanes, Polaroid SX-70's, Olivetti typewriters, Lambretta scooters, Commodore 64 computers, Wacker Innsbruck, etc.) have disappeared despite the enormous love and respect that they command. According to the LC-A's Russian factory (LOMO PLC), the LC-A has proven too expensive to continue given their existing structure. As they no longer produce any cameras outside of the LC-A, they lost key manufacturing synergies. Engineers and craftsmen experienced in 35mm cameras are a dying breed. Wages and energy costs have skyrocketed. Our beloved LC-A consists of 450 individual parts, and is extremely labor-intensive to construct. The days of its precise assembly by hand have come to an end and its production is no longer cost-effective within their new structure.

I'm working on my website to a total re-new I will be available soon I made a set of new poster with that illustrations which I MADE in Feb .We will have 3 exhibitions in spring
2 poster exhibitions in the holy city of Qom in a caltural center & another in Isfahan's contemporaray art museum ... the 1st one is realy excites me as Qom is like Vatican with a totaly religious atmosphere I'm looking forward to see how they think about our posters ....

Iranian Viedo artworks in india curated by Dr. Hamid Severi (I was his student in the Azad University...) TMCA's curator with some arworks of these folks: Farid jafari, Barbad Golshiri,Rozita Sharaf jahan, Neda Razavipour,Daryoush Mehrjoee, Mania Akbari,Simin Keramati, Maryam Niazadeh,Seyfolah Samadian,Ebrahim Haghighi,Zohreh Eskandari & Morteza Darebaghi,I refused to send artworks to him to review as I am not acceptbale one & I'm not his friend &I hate all these TMCA things & stuffs,aslo in my opinion a curator should find the artists but here evertything is upside down, artists mostly find the curator sitting in his office & they ask him to accept them (this is just like begging some times). Amoung these collection Rozita Sharafjahan's video artworks [deep depression] was shown once in her own gallery the Tarahan Azad art gallery Tehran Feb 2004 (the exhibition which I curated), Farid Jafari who makes video artworks for many so called iranian video artists specially the Group 30+'s members called once & said: He (severi) wants to review the artworks wanna come i said no cause a good curator should come after these things not me! I meant visiting the exhibitions, going to artists' studios & ... is their job! ( As many international cuartors came here to parkingallery to see our artworks) We don't have to wait at their door! & this is the result there is no image in the news just some lines & no feed back, that's all!

Jacek Mrowczyk is editor of 2+3D magazine & i met him In Tehran during the 8th tehran Poster Biennial.He sent me some questions for an article about Iran which published recently....
1. What is inspiring for you during your design process? Who is your hero in design world?
I do lots of photography during the design process, then I work on typography, after that i mix them with each other I liked David Carson's when I was younger, Now I'm interested in MM Paris Design & uwe loecsh, among Iranian designers , I like Reza Abedini & Ghobad Shiva because I have been learning a lot from them & I still can do now

2. Is it important for you to keep Iranian character (stylistic) of your work?
Not that much because I'm living in another period of time & I hate to absorb the world's attention this way its a long story [just like our cinema] while western collectors, curators & art director are paying attention to this co called character which is recently being wasted be new Iranian designer by using the old images with lack of knowledge & concept & just for show off or for the international festivals' tastes
I have to mention these new waves of looking at the Middle East [we are in the news everyday] in west caused the world's view to searching on the surface not deep in side just as the news reporters are looking at it & promoting this to the world.

3. How deep influence has non figurative Islamic art?
I think this background caused us to imagine better than the other designers but I pushed us into abstract images & motifs, I work with photography so I can't be much non figurative designer, for me those influences could be useful in layouts & typography because of our heavy back ground in calligraphy...

4. Very often I could find Latin typography together with Arabic letters. Which typography (Latin or Persian) has bigger potential for creativity?
perhaps every good designer likes to work with his own letters the Persian typography is a little bit different because our basic unit in typography isn't letters but the words, We design [if we design?! many Iranian designers still use the ready fonts which are available & few & ugly ] each word by its connections & its own atmosphere so we have more space to change or create something out of it, its harder than working on letters like Latin typography but the result in my opinion will be brighter & deeper.

5. How looks like Iranian market for graphic designers? Is it easy in Iran to start your own company? Is it possible only in big cities?

I can't tell exactly cause we are bad surrounded by low type & low taste cheap un educated designers[?!], advertising companies & many rules & there are some permission committees in the government that we have to pass to show our creativities in our design, another problem is the clients who are not aware of the importance of the good design they are some companies in every filed which simply employ some students or some in expensive technician to do perform the manager's idea with out the normal design fee that they have to pay if they work a professional designer, as the result our advertising out put is awful the only hope is the cultural activates which are no very well paid projects , so we can not easily depend on that too. yes the only big cites can have such studios because the money is there, I've been traveling In Iran during past 4 months I visited many cities the were full of advertising companies or even print shops which are offering the design as a discount to their clients, no idea, no creativities, nothing.

About parkingallery in its 2nd anniversary!

Parkingallery is a Tehran based independent art space founded by Amirali Ghasemi in 1998 in a parking area of a residential apartment. Parkingallery started initially as design studio, to help young Iranian visual artists through their exhibitions by designing the invitation cards, making portfolios & booking galleries and later by designing web sites [iranian profile] to introduce young talent. During this period we held several exhibitions in the parking area. [the actual parkingallery] Parkingallery also started some audio visual projects such Parkingallery video tryouts & the Meera project . We are grateful for the support of these people while parkingallery was setting out: Navid Ghaemmaghami , Nariman Amiri , Nazli Ataei & Yasser Raad .

In Sep 2002 Amirali Ghasemi, Borzoo Forootan & Armin Zoghi started the Parkingallery.com project as an online gallery to present a brand new generation of graphic designers, photographer & contemporary artists. Drawing & photography sessions & web design classes were also held in this period.

In Feb 2004 parkingallery held its 1st annual exhibition around the theme of ‘deep depression' with international participants producing video & audio installations, photography, performance & typography. In March 2004 parkingallery took over the 127 project, started by Reza Haeri in 2002, documenting the progress of the Tehran band 127.

As we reach the second anniversary of parkingallery.com, we have more than 20 active artists; a new generation of Iranian contemporary artists. We seek to provide an international platform for independent, creative artists.

Live from the IRISI was working on picture that i took for a video art poster. When it finished, I found my reflection in TV. So this unexpected auto-portait was created. A review of a strange exhibition might be interesting if you put some the facts which are strange but easy to understand, when you enter the exhibition you will face a black suitcase full of fiction in the middle of the stairs, the papers are dropped here and there and if you pick up one of the you can easily read a title " Depression".
Then when you turn and go down the rest of stairs you will face a man which his face is like the dead people working on a grave stone, around him are filled by many candles… as it can be read on his grave stone his name is Omid Bamdad & he died today. He is presenting the visitors a box full of dates as Iranian tradition in moaning after some one who passed away…
Just after you met this dead guy you will meet a bride (angelo di morte) her name is Tinoush Shariat Panahi, walking around the exhibition hall with deadly silence her face is white instead of her eyes which are looking around to hunt!

I'm really deepressed. we are working on the deepressionart.com a multimeda project which contain video art, audio art, typography and photography. my video will be about a fake Tv which is caled deepression Tv just like fashion TV which is trying to make people feel depress; It says; are you depressed ? Come to depression area ! Join the deepTv model awards!!

deepression a multimedia project by parkingallery All artists from all over the world can join exhibition. Joining exhibition is free but there are some costs for invitation cards & posters, (the estimated fee for each participator will be around 6 US$s) but it can be reduced when more participator join the exhibition.We are also looking for sponsors who are interested in this project if you are interested or if you know some one who may be able to help please let us know. Current & basic location of the exhibition is parkingallery's office in Tehran.We are trying to make this travel around the world, so 1st step is the exhibition's web site to find more audiences .After receiving more artworks/ideas/proposals we will book some other galleries to expand the exhibition.
